Hi students,
Today, we watched two YouTube videos in class about the Gilded Age and the short-lived Populist movement that came right after it. We discussed how it was important to study the time period that a story was written in to truly understand the underlying ideas and themes of a literary work. We all know that L. Frank Baum was a populist, and many leading literary scholars believe that The Wizard of Oz was a political allegory (a story with a very significant meaning). Therefore, we watched John Greene's crash course on the Gilded Age. Please focus on the second half of the video, which explains the origins and rise of populism. Then, we watched Mr. Beat's informative video on the populist movement itself. I have linked both videos below. Feel free to re-watch them. There were several of you absent today due to an early vacation departure or because you were helping out in ASB. Please be sure to watch both videos during your holiday break. Finally, when we get back from break, we will be writing notes and creating timelines in our Oz Journals. I will be discussing some important historical events in more detail. See you back in school on the 4th of January, 2016! John Greene's Crash Course - The Gilded Age The Populist Movement - Mr. Beat's Social Studies Channel Hi students! Great job, periods 1-2, 3-4, and 5-6 on your theme statements yesterday. Your theme statements are listed below. I went ahead and made the topic green and the content imperative blue in order for you to truly visualize the main two components needed in a theme statement (a theme topic and a content imperative). Always refer to your resource folder for extra help and a list of universal theme topics and verbs that connect to the five content imperatives.
Period 1-2 Selfish power does not lead to happiness because it will only contribute to destruction. Period 3-4 When people try to control the forces of nature, it will cause negative consequences. (Cause can be used for the content imperative, contribute) Period 5-6-H The tyranny of greed and selfish ambition contributes to a pattern of destruction. Period 1-2 Table Groups' Theme Statements
Table 1: Forgiveness contributes to peace and reunification. Comment: Awesome! 18 votes Table 2: When love is segregated, one person must make a change to contribute. Comment: Awesome! 10 votes Table 3: Loneliness contributes to conflict. Comment: This is a good theme only for the first part of the film because in the resolution, the grandma and grandpa are NOT in a conflict. Table 4: Even if you can't physically be with the person you love, you must face challenges and changes to be with them. Comment: This is about the entire film as a whole, however, there are so many topics, that is hard to figure out which one it is. We should keep our theme statements as simple as possible. Table 5: With love, you can overcome obstacles and converge as one. Comment: Great! Let's try next time to not use "you." Table 6: Love could lead to many consequences, but it always contributes to forgiveness. Comment: Daniel says that maybe it should say "can contribute" since "always" might not be accurate. Table 7: Love can affect in many ways. Comment: This is way too general. We still want our theme statement to be as closely related to the story we saw or read. How does love affect people in this particular film? Table 8: Nothing can go against the power of love. Comment: It needs to have a clearer content imperative AND the word "NOTHING" might not be the best word to use. Remember, using words like ALWAYS or NOTHING or NEVER might not always be the best idea because it is too final. Period 3-4 Table Groups' Theme Statements Table 2: Love has the power to overcome internal conflicts. Comment: This is good theme statement, BUT it is not specific enough to the story. It is too general. The underlying imperative for this is contribution. Table 3: Don’t let differences separate you from your love; contribute to your love. Comment: How should one contribute to their love? Table 4: Love is stronger than any force. Comment: I like this one because of the “force” part — since the movie has the forces of gravity as a huge element of the setting - HOWEVER, once again, it is too general - be a bit more specific to the story’s plot Table 5: No matter what forces are pulling your relationship apart, your love will always stay reflected to each other. Comment: This is very artistic and creative! What is the underlying content imperative (parallel?)…. Table 6: Paths will always unite, no matter the forces. Comment: This is a nice statement, but be a bit more specific about the paths. This story was about a relationship between people, so relate to that a bit more. Table 7: Don’t stay in your own universe; turn yourself around in gratitude towards those around you. Comment: This is also a very creative theme statement since it relates two different universes (upside down and right side up)…and I like the “gratitude” part because that’s what makes the grandma change her perspective. Table 8: Determination and happiness should always lead you to a path with others. Comment: This is nice BUT once again, too general. Determination is not really a major part of this story. Determination means never giving up and working towards a goal. Table 9: The relationship between two people that love each other cannot be broken even if everything is upside down. Comment: I really like this one because the upside down part is both literal (actually means what it means) and figurative (artistic in meaning) |
